Call for Projects: Grants to Combat Disinformation in the Western Balkans

The Western Balkans region faces a significant challenge in the form of rampant disinformation, which undermines democratic processes, fuels social divisions, and threatens regional stability. This "infodemic," often spread through online platforms and amplified by malicious actors, has become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to counter. Recognizing the urgent need to address this issue, a new call for projects has been launched, offering grants to organizations working to combat disinformation and promote media literacy in the Western Balkans. This initiative aims to empower local communities with the tools and knowledge necessary to identify, analyze, and debunk false narratives while fostering a more resilient information ecosystem.

This call for projects focuses on supporting innovative and impactful initiatives that address the root causes of disinformation and its harmful consequences. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate a clear understanding of the local context, employ evidence-based approaches, and promote collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Eligible applicants include civil society organizations, media outlets, academic institutions, and other relevant actors operating in the Western Balkans. Projects may focus on a variety of activities, such as fact-checking and debunking, media literacy training, investigative journalism, digital literacy programs, and the development of technological tools to identify and counter disinformation campaigns.

The grant program will provide funding for a range of project sizes and durations, recognizing the diverse needs and capacities of organizations in the region. Applicants are encouraged to develop projects that are sustainable and have the potential for long-term impact. The selection process will be competitive and based on rigorous criteria, including the project’s relevance, feasibility, innovation, and potential for impact. A panel of independent experts will evaluate the proposals and recommend the most promising projects for funding. Successful applicants will receive not only financial support but also technical assistance and networking opportunities to enhance their project implementation and amplify their impact.

Combating disinformation requires a multi-faceted approach that engages all segments of society. Therefore, projects that involve partnerships and collaborations among different actors are highly encouraged. Collaboration between civil society organizations, media outlets, academic institutions, and government agencies can create synergies and maximize the impact of interventions. For example, media outlets can collaborate with fact-checking organizations to verify information and debunk false narratives. Civil society organizations can partner with educational institutions to develop media literacy curricula and deliver training programs to young people. Such collaborative efforts can contribute to a more comprehensive and effective response to the disinformation challenge.

This call for projects represents a significant investment in the future of the Western Balkans. By supporting local organizations and initiatives, the grant program aims to strengthen the resilience of the region’s information ecosystem and empower citizens to critically evaluate information and make informed decisions. A more informed and engaged citizenry is essential for the healthy functioning of democratic societies and the preservation of peace and stability in the region. This initiative also recognizes the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the transnational nature of disinformation. By fostering cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing, the program seeks to create a regional network of actors working together to counter disinformation and promote media literacy.

The fight against disinformation is an ongoing and evolving challenge. This grant program is a crucial step towards equipping the Western Balkans with the necessary tools and resources to counter this threat effectively. By supporting innovative projects and fostering collaboration, this initiative aims to create a more resilient information environment and empower citizens to navigate the complex digital landscape. The success of this program will not only strengthen democratic values and institutions in the Western Balkans but also contribute to a more informed and engaged global community. The fight against disinformation requires sustained effort, innovation, and collaboration, and this grant program serves as a catalyst for positive change in the region. Ultimately, by empowering local actors and fostering a culture of critical thinking, the Western Balkans can build a more resilient and democratic future.
