The Gambia Launches Nationwide Campaign to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation

Bijilo, The Gambia – In a decisive move to address the escalating threat of misinformation and disinformation, the Gambian government, in collaboration with the Gambia Press Union (GPU), launched a nationwide public awareness campaign on Friday. The campaign, inaugurated at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo, aims to equip citizens with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the complex information landscape, particularly in the context of political discourse. The initiative underscores a shared commitment between the government and the GPU to empower citizens and foster a more informed and resilient democracy.

The prevalence of misinformation and disinformation, both online and offline, has become a significant concern in The Gambia, particularly during election cycles. These insidious practices, often spread through social media, traditional media, and by influential figures, can mislead the public, erode trust in institutions, and even incite violence. Recognizing the urgent need to combat this growing menace, the government, through the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, has taken the lead in spearheading this crucial campaign. The initiative seeks to provide citizens with the tools and knowledge to identify and critically evaluate information, enabling them to distinguish between factual reporting and deliberate attempts to manipulate public opinion.

Sheriff Bojang Jr., Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, stressed the vital role of accurate information in a functioning democracy. He emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a media landscape characterized by transparency, accountability, and adherence to ethical principles. The minister highlighted the campaign’s objective of empowering citizens to recognize propaganda and misinformation, fostering a more discerning public capable of engaging critically with information from diverse sources. He expressed confidence that the campaign would significantly contribute to creating a more informed citizenry and bolstering the country’s democratic processes.

Mohammed Ibrahim Sanyang, Secretary General of the GPU, expressed his organization’s strong support for the campaign, emphasizing the GPU’s ongoing commitment to combating misinformation and disinformation. He recounted the GPU’s proactive efforts since 2021, which have included various capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing journalists’ skills in identifying and countering misinformation. Sanyang highlighted the collaboration with UNESCO in the lead-up to the 2021 elections, which resulted in the training of 25 journalists in fact-checking techniques. This initiative led to the establishment of FactCheck Gambia, the country’s first independent digital fact-checking platform.

FactCheck Gambia, operated by the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJAC), plays a crucial role in verifying information disseminated through traditional and social media channels. Its primary mission is to expose false or misleading claims, promoting accuracy and accountability in public discourse. Sanyang emphasized the platform’s effectiveness in debunking misinformation and disinformation, contributing to a more informed electorate. He underscored the importance of independent fact-checking initiatives in safeguarding the integrity of elections and promoting transparency in democratic processes.

This nationwide campaign reflects the Gambian government’s dedication to promoting media literacy and fostering a more discerning public. By equipping citizens with the skills to critically evaluate information, the campaign aims to mitigate the harmful effects of misinformation and disinformation. The initiative’s success hinges on the collaboration and active participation of various stakeholders, including government agencies, media organizations, civil society groups, and individual citizens. The collective effort to combat misinformation and disinformation is essential for safeguarding democratic values, fostering informed public discourse, and ensuring the integrity of electoral processes. The campaign signifies a crucial step towards creating a more resilient and informed society in The Gambia, better equipped to navigate the challenges of the digital age.
