Combating Misinformation at the Grassroots: Bangladesh Information Ministry Empowers District Offices
DHAKA, BANGLADESH – In an era dominated by the rapid spread of information, both accurate and false, the Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is taking decisive action to empower its district information offices in the fight against misinformation and rumors. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam addressed a gathering of officials and staff, emphasizing the crucial role they play in ensuring the free flow of verified information at the local level. This initiative acknowledges the increasing influence of misinformation in shaping public opinion and its potential to disrupt social harmony and stability.
Mr. Alam stressed the need for proactive engagement by district information officers, urging them to go beyond simply disseminating information and actively combat disinformation within their respective areas. He highlighted the strategic importance of these offices in mobilizing public awareness campaigns and called for stronger coordination with district administrations, local journalists, and community leaders. By establishing effective communication channels and collaborative networks, the ministry aims to create a robust system for countering false narratives before they take root and spread throughout communities.
A key component of this strategy is the acceleration of construction projects for district information complexes across the country. The meeting brought together key figures from the media and information landscape, including BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor Mahbub Morshed, MCD Director General Faizul Haque, Principal Information Officer Md Nizmul Kabir, DG of the Department of Films and Publications Khaleda Begum, Journalists Welfare Trust MD Muhammad Abdullah, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Director Md Abed Nomani, former secretary Syed Suja Uddin Ahmed, and former MCD DG Md Abdul Mannan. This diverse representation highlights the collaborative nature of the initiative and the shared responsibility in combating misinformation.
