French Report Alleges Chinese Disinformation Campaign Targeting Rafale Jets Following India-Pakistan Clash

France Accuses China of Disinformation Campaign Targeting Rafale Fighter Jet

PARIS – French intelligence officials have leveled serious allegations against China, accusing the nation of orchestrating a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the Dassault Rafale fighter jet. This campaign, they claim, was launched in the wake of the aircraft’s deployment by the Indian Air Force during a tense aerial confrontation with Pakistan in May. The allegations mark a significant escalation in tensions between France and China, adding a new layer of complexity to the already delicate geopolitical landscape.

According to a report shared with the Associated Press by a French military official, the alleged Chinese operation unfolded on multiple fronts. It involved leveraging diplomatic channels, particularly through embassies, to exert pressure on nations considering or having already purchased the Rafale. Countries like Indonesia, which is currently evaluating the Rafale for its air force modernization program, were reportedly targeted with misinformation intended to dissuade them from acquiring the French-made aircraft. Simultaneously, a broader online disinformation campaign was allegedly unleashed, involving doctored images, artificially generated content, and fabricated combat footage purportedly showing the Rafale’s inferior performance. This digital offensive, French officials claim, was amplified through a network of over 1,000 newly created social media accounts, designed to spread the disinformation widely and rapidly.

While French military sources acknowledge they lack conclusive evidence directly linking these activities to the Chinese government, they point to a pattern of behavior that strongly suggests official involvement. Reports indicate that Chinese embassy officials echoed similar claims in direct meetings with foreign defense officials, mirroring the narrative being disseminated online. This coordinated messaging, French officials argue, points towards a centrally directed effort to undermine the Rafale’s reputation and promote Chinese-made military hardware as a superior alternative.

The May confrontation between India and Pakistan, the most serious in years, served as the catalyst for this alleged disinformation campaign. During the clash, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian aircraft, including three Rafales. India, while acknowledging some losses, refrained from specifying the number of aircraft downed. The French Air Force Chief, Gen. Jérôme Bellanger, later confirmed the loss of three Indian aircraft: a Rafale, a Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and a Mirage 2000. This discrepancy in reported losses, combined with the lack of verifiable evidence to support Pakistan’s claims, created fertile ground for the spread of misinformation, which was subsequently exploited by the alleged Chinese campaign.

The purported aim of this disinformation campaign, according to the French Ministry of Defense, was to “promote the superiority of alternative equipment, notably of Chinese design.” This suggests that China sought to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding the May air clashes to advance its own military export ambitions. By casting doubt on the Rafale’s capabilities, China could potentially sway potential buyers towards its own fighter jets, such as the J-10C and JF-17, strengthening its foothold in the global arms market.

China’s Ministry of National Defence has vehemently denied France’s accusations, dismissing them as “groundless rumours and slander.” Beijing maintains that it adheres to a “prudent and responsible approach” to military exports and rejects any involvement in the alleged disinformation campaign. This denial, however, has done little to quell concerns in Paris, where officials view the incident as a deliberate attempt to undermine French interests and damage the reputation of a key defense industry product. The allegations have further strained relations between France and China, adding another layer of complexity to the already fraught geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. The incident underscores the increasing role of disinformation in international relations and the challenges it poses to maintaining stability and trust in a rapidly changing world.
