French Senate Delegation Reaffirms Support for Taiwan Amidst Growing Global Tensions

Taipei, Taiwan – A delegation of French senators, led by Rachid Temal, Chairman of the French Senate’s Taiwan Friendship Group, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday for a six-day visit aimed at solidifying France’s commitment to Taiwan’s security and democracy. The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, with China’s increasing assertiveness posing a challenge to the existing regional order. During meetings with high-ranking Taiwanese officials, including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) representatives and Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, Senator Temal reiterated France’s unwavering support for Taiwan, emphasizing the island nation’s democratic values and its strategic importance in the region. The delegation’s visit underscores the growing international concern over cross-strait stability and the importance of maintaining a robust democratic presence in the face of authoritarian expansion.

Senator Temal stressed the importance of joint efforts between Taiwan and France in combating disinformation and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait, highlighting the shared challenges democracies face from China and Russia. He echoed recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, underscoring France’s commitment to upholding the “status quo” in the Taiwan Strait and opposing any unilateral attempts to alter the delicate balance in the region. He referenced the French government’s updated Indo-Pacific Strategy report released in July, which clearly articulates France’s desire for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and its opposition to any unilateral actions that could destabilize the region. This stance, he noted, has garnered support within the European Union, further strengthening the international consensus on the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The French delegation’s visit signifies a concrete demonstration of support for Taiwan and a commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Senator Temal expressed his hope for enhanced cooperation between the two nations in various areas, including trade and investment, cultural and educational exchanges, collaboration in high-tech industries, and joint efforts to counter disinformation campaigns and safeguard freedom of navigation in the strategically crucial Taiwan Strait. The visit underscores the growing recognition of Taiwan’s democratic values and its strategic importance in maintaining regional stability.

DPP Secretary-General Hsu Kuo-yung expressed gratitude for France’s consistent support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, such as the World Health Assembly and the International Civil Aviation Organization. He emphasized the need for continued French support for Taiwan’s bid to join the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), highlighting Taiwan’s potential contribution to global efforts in combating cross-border crime. He acknowledged the French Parliament’s longstanding support for Taiwan, a cornerstone of the strengthening relationship between the two countries. Looking forward, he expressed hope for increased ministerial-level exchanges and reciprocal visits by lawmakers, fostering deeper collaboration in addressing shared challenges such as disinformation and upholding democratic principles.

The growing economic ties between Taiwan and France were also highlighted, with Hsu noting recent announcements of cooperation between companies from both countries in key sectors such as semiconductors and satellites. This burgeoning economic partnership further strengthens the overall relationship and underscores the mutual benefits of closer collaboration. Temal’s meeting with Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu further cemented the French Senate’s cross-party support for Taiwan. Temal praised Taiwan’s democracy as a model for others and extended an invitation to Han to visit France, suggesting he would be a “perfect ambassador” for Taiwan.

The visit by the French Senate delegation sends a strong message of support for Taiwan amidst growing regional tensions. It underscores the importance of maintaining a robust international coalition to uphold democratic values and safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The emphasis on cooperation in combating disinformation and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait reflects the shared concerns and commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. The expanding economic ties and the call for increased high-level exchanges further solidify the growing partnership between France and Taiwan, signifying a shared commitment to democratic principles and a rules-based international order. The visit highlights the growing international recognition of Taiwan’s importance as a democratic partner and its strategic role in maintaining regional stability.
