MANGALORE, INDIA – June 24, 2025 – The Dakshina Kannada police have launched a concerted effort to combat the spread of misinformation on social media, filing four separate cases related to false reports of an attempted stabbing of two Muslim men in Sajipadnadu, Ullal taluk, on June 20. The incident, initially portrayed as a targeted attack, has been debunked by police investigations, revealing a narrative fueled by fabricated social media posts and online news reports. Authorities are taking a firm stance against those responsible for spreading the false information, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting and the potential harm caused by sensationalized narratives.
The genesis of the misinformation can be traced to a WhatsApp group called “Muslim Yuva Balaga,” where a user named Ziyad Ummi posted a message claiming that two Muslim youths had been targeted in a stabbing incident in Sajipanadu. This message quickly gained traction, leading to a gathering of concerned individuals at the alleged incident site. The Bantwal Rural police, recognizing the potential for public unrest and the spread of fear based on inaccurate information, registered a case against Ummi under Section 240 of the Bombay Native Summary (BNS), which addresses the provision of false information regarding an offense.
The police investigation extended beyond the initial WhatsApp post, encompassing other instances of misinformation disseminated through various online platforms.
