Government Denounces Fabricated CEPEP Document as Disinformation Tactic Amidst Approaching Elections

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago – A controversy erupted in the political landscape of Trinidad and Tobago as a fabricated document, purportedly issued by the Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP), surfaced on social media. The document falsely claimed that CEPEP workers were being coerced into supporting Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley under the threat of job loss. Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Faris Al-Rawi, vehemently denounced the document as a malicious disinformation campaign orchestrated by the opposition United National Congress (UNC).

The fraudulent memo, which rapidly circulated online, instructed CEPEP workers to attend meetings in support of the Prime Minister. Minister Al-Rawi categorically denied the authenticity of the document, stating that no such communication had been issued by CEPEP, its management, or any government representative. He condemned the fabrication as a deliberate attempt to undermine public trust in democratic institutions, the leadership of the Prime Minister, and the integrity of government programs.

Al-Rawi pointed fingers at the UNC, accusing them of employing a strategy of disinformation to manipulate public perception through deception, forgery, and fear-mongering. He labeled their actions as irresponsible, reprehensible, anti-democratic, and deeply corrosive to the civic fabric of the society. The Minister urged citizens to reject such tactics and demand accountability and integrity from political leaders.

CEPEP Company Limited also issued a statement via social media, confirming that the memo was "100% fake" and had never been issued by the organization. They expressed disappointment over the lengths to which some individuals would go to spread misinformation and advance political agendas. The company reaffirmed its commitment to serving the people of Trinidad and Tobago with integrity, transparency, and patriotism, emphasizing its non-affiliation with any political party.

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of the upcoming general elections scheduled for April 28th. Minister Al-Rawi called on citizens to be vigilant against misinformation campaigns and to uphold the principles of truth and transparency in the electoral process. He expressed his unwavering commitment to serving the people of San Fernando West and the nation, emphasizing his dedication to truth, transparency, and effective governance.

The fabricated document and the ensuing accusations have injected further tension into the already charged political atmosphere. As the election draws nearer, the battle against misinformation and the upholding of democratic values will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and determining the outcome of the polls. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for fabricated information to disrupt democratic processes and erode public trust. It underscores the importance of critical thinking, media literacy, and responsible online behavior in safeguarding the integrity of democratic institutions. The government’s strong condemnation of the fake document and its attribution to the opposition highlight the escalating political tensions in the lead-up to the elections.
