NewsGuard’s methodology involved testing ten prominent AI models with questions related to ten false narratives circulating online. One example highlighted the case of a Moldovan Parliament speaker falsely accused by Russian propaganda of comparing his compatriots to sheep. Six out of the ten AI models reportedly echoed this fabricated claim. While this raises a red flag, it’s crucial to approach these findings with caution. The limited sample size and focus on niche topics in NewsGuard’s study necessitate further investigation before drawing definitive conclusions. Additionally, NewsGuard’s commercial interest in providing data annotation services to AI companies could potentially influence their research outcomes. Other benchmarks indicate that AI models are actually improving in their factual accuracy, contradicting NewsGuard’s claims.

Despite these caveats, the report underscores a critical vulnerability in current AI systems. Their reliance on diverse online sources, including social media and less reputable websites, makes them susceptible to manipulation. Malign actors could exploit this vulnerability by strategically placing disinformation online, even if it’s not intended for human consumption, to influence chatbot responses. This tactic could be particularly effective for topics receiving limited coverage in mainstream media, where the prevalence of unreliable information is higher.

This emerging challenge highlights a complex interplay between AI economics and the information ecosystem. While technically feasible for AI companies to prioritize information from credible news sources, the practice remains largely opaque. The lack of transparency surrounding how AI companies weight information sources could stem from copyright concerns, as exemplified by the ongoing lawsuit between The New York Times and OpenAI over alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted articles. Should AI companies explicitly acknowledge their reliance on reputable news outlets, these organizations might have stronger grounds for seeking compensation or damages. Several news organizations, including TIME, have licensing agreements with AI companies like OpenAI and Perplexity, but these agreements don’t guarantee preferential treatment in search results.

California finds itself once again at the forefront of AI regulation as SB 53, a bill mandating transparency and risk management measures for AI companies, awaits Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature. This bill, a revised version of a similar proposal vetoed by Newsom last year following intense lobbying from tech giants and venture capitalists, requires AI companies to disclose risk assessments, transparency reports, and safety incidents to state authorities. It also includes provisions for whistleblower protection and financial penalties for non-compliance. Anthropic, a leading AI company, has publicly endorsed SB 53, signaling a potential shift in the industry’s stance towards regulation.
