EU Bolsters Fight Against Disinformation and Champions AI Development with €140 Million Investment

Brussels, April 15, 2025 – The European Commission today announced a significant investment of up to €140 million to propel the development and deployment of artificial intelligence while simultaneously combating the pervasive threat of disinformation. This funding, channeled through the Digital Europe Programme, underscores the Commission’s commitment to fostering a robust digital landscape that balances innovation with societal well-being. The initiative aims to equip Europe with the tools and expertise needed to navigate the complex digital age, addressing critical challenges while unlocking the transformative potential of emerging technologies. The funding will be accessible through four distinct calls, open for applications until September 2nd, 2025. This strategic investment aligns with the broader European digital strategy, emphasizing the importance of digital sovereignty and ethical technological advancement.

The Commission’s multifaceted approach tackles several key areas crucial for a thriving digital future. Alongside the focus on AI and disinformation mitigation, substantial funding will be allocated to enhancing advanced digital skills across the European workforce. This initiative recognizes the growing demand for specialized expertise in areas such as data science, cybersecurity, and AI development, essential for maintaining Europe’s competitiveness in the global digital economy. Furthermore, the investment will bolster the expansion of the European Digital Innovation Hubs network, creating collaborative ecosystems that connect businesses, research institutions, and public administrations to drive digital transformation across various sectors. These hubs will serve as vital catalysts for innovation, facilitating knowledge sharing, fostering partnerships, and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies.

The fight against disinformation represents a central pillar of the Commission’s digital strategy. The proliferation of false and misleading information online poses a significant threat to democratic processes, social cohesion, and public trust. This funding will support the development of innovative tools and technologies to detect, analyze, and counter disinformation campaigns, empowering citizens and organizations to navigate the information landscape with greater discernment. The Commission recognizes the urgency of addressing this challenge and is committed to fostering a more resilient and informed society.

In parallel with combating disinformation, the Commission is actively promoting the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence. Recognizing the transformative potential of AI across various sectors, the funding will support research and innovation in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. The Commission emphasizes the importance of ethical AI development, ensuring that these technologies are deployed in a manner that respects fundamental rights, promotes fairness, and avoids perpetuating biases. This balanced approach aims to harness the power of AI for societal benefit while mitigating potential risks.

The Digital Europe Programme, through which this funding is being allocated, represents a cornerstone of the EU’s digital strategy. With a total budget of €7.5 billion, the program aims to accelerate the digital transformation of Europe’s economy and society. It focuses on five key areas: supercomputing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced digital skills, and ensuring the wide use of digital technologies across the economy and society. The program reflects the EU’s commitment to investing in its digital future, ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of technological innovation.

This comprehensive investment in the digital landscape underscores the European Commission’s commitment to fostering a future-proof digital economy that balances innovation, societal well-being, and democratic values. By tackling the challenges of disinformation and promoting the ethical development of AI, while simultaneously investing in advanced digital skills and expanding the network of European Digital Innovation Hubs, the Commission is laying the foundation for a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous digital future for Europe. The availability of this funding through clearly defined calls provides a tangible opportunity for stakeholders across the digital ecosystem to contribute to this transformative vision. This initiative resonates with global efforts to navigate the complexities of the digital age responsibly, shaping a future where technology serves as a force for progress and empowerment.
