India Blocks Thousands of Social Media Accounts Amidst Rising Tensions with Pakistan, Sparking Censorship Concerns
In a move raising serious concerns about freedom of speech and press freedom in India, the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) revealed on May 8th that it had blocked over 8,000 accounts in India in compliance with government directives. The accounts targeted include international news organizations, prominent individuals, and several media outlets reporting on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Those affected by the ban have decried the action as a blatant violation of law and a dangerous precedent for censorship in a democratic nation. The government’s censorship extends beyond social media. The Wire, which cited a CNN report in its initial coverage, subsequently removed the piece and challenged the government’s blocking order, calling it an unconstitutional attack on press freedom. Similarly, Maktoob Media, a news platform focusing on minority issues, and BBC Urdu also had their X accounts withheld. Internet service providers indicated that the blockings were carried out under orders from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, further solidifying the government’s role in the clampdown. Individual journalists, including Anuradha Bhasin, author and managing editor of Kashmir Times, and Muzamil Jaleel, also found their X accounts deactivated.
