Moldova’s Information Landscape Bolstered by DW and RFI România Partnership Amidst Disinformation and Political Polarization

Chisinau, Moldova – The Republic of Moldova is bracing itself for parliamentary elections on September 28th against a backdrop of escalating political tensions and a surge in disinformation campaigns, predominantly originating from Russia. This volatile information environment, exacerbated by the recent withdrawal of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), has created a critical void in independent news coverage. Recognizing the urgent need for reliable information, Deutsche Welle (DW) and RFI România, a subsidiary of France Médias Monde, have launched a collaborative initiative to bolster independent journalism and counter disinformation within Moldova. This partnership represents a vital first step in fortifying European media structures in the region.

The departure of RFE/RL from Moldova has left a significant gap in the media landscape, creating a fertile ground for the spread of misinformation. While RFE/RL received substantial funding (€142.2 million) in fiscal year 2024, the U.S. government’s decision to cut its funding in May 2025 led to the organization’s withdrawal. The DW and RFI România collaboration aims to mitigate the impact of this loss and ensure the continued flow of objective, fact-based reporting to the Moldovan public. This initiative is particularly crucial in a country navigating complex geopolitical pressures and facing targeted disinformation campaigns.

DW and RFI România bring complementary strengths to this partnership. DW’s global reach and multilingual expertise, combined with RFI România’s established presence in the region and deep understanding of the local context, create a powerful synergy. RFI România, operating seven FM frequencies within Moldova including one in Chisinau, has cultivated a strong audience and enjoys high credibility in both Romania and Moldova. Their new daily program “Moldova Zoom,” alongside an enhanced digital presence, aims to provide comprehensive coverage of Moldovan affairs. The partnership with DW amplifies these efforts, offering Moldovan audiences access to professional, unbiased, and independent journalism.

This pilot project will produce content tailored specifically for Moldova’s diverse population, with programming in both Romanian and Russian. A joint reporting team from DW and RFI România will travel throughout Moldova, including politically sensitive regions like Gagauzia and areas bordering Ukraine, to gather firsthand accounts and capture the voices of local communities. This on-the-ground reporting will provide crucial insights into the realities facing Moldovans and help counteract narratives propagated by disinformation campaigns.

The initiative will also leverage the power of digital platforms, producing short-form video content for social media designed to engage younger audiences. These videos will explain complex issues in an accessible manner, focusing on identifying and debunking disinformation while promoting European values. This emphasis on media literacy is critical in empowering Moldovan citizens to critically evaluate information and make informed decisions. Furthermore, select DW reports will be integrated into the programming of Moldova 1, the country’s public broadcaster, offering European perspectives on critical issues such as migration, security, and EU enlargement.

The collaboration between DW and RFI România underscores the importance of independent journalism in safeguarding democratic processes. As Moldova navigates a challenging political climate and confronts the threat of disinformation, access to credible information is paramount. This initiative represents a crucial first step in strengthening resilience within Moldova’s information space. However, long-term success requires a sustained commitment from European institutions and a comprehensive strategy to counter disinformation and promote media literacy within the region. By empowering Moldovan citizens with access to accurate and balanced information, this partnership aims to contribute to a stronger democracy and a more informed populace.
