DSWD Region 2 Launches Information Caravan to Combat Fake News and Empower Solo Parents
CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela – In an era dominated by the rapid dissemination of information through social media, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 2 has taken a proactive stance against the proliferation of fake news, particularly concerning its programs and services. Recognizing the potential harm misinformation can inflict on vulnerable communities, the agency has launched an information caravan aptly titled “Tamang Tulong sa Tamang Impormasyon” (Right Aid Through Right Information). This initiative aims to equip the public, especially DSWD clients, with the skills to discern credible information from fabricated claims and to access legitimate assistance programs.
The campaign’s second leg recently unfolded at Robinsons Place Santiago, focusing on empowering solo parents from the municipalities of Ramon, Cordon, and Echague, as well as Santiago City. Forty solo parents participated in the event, gaining valuable insights into identifying authentic DSWD communications and avoiding online scams. According to DSWD Region 2 Information Officer Hannah Gracielle M. Urata, the caravan is a direct response to a directive from Secretary Rex Gatchalian, underscoring the agency’s commitment to transparent and accurate information dissemination. The initiative will be expanded in the coming weeks to encompass other sectors, ensuring broader public awareness and engagement.
Urata emphasized the importance of relying solely on official DSWD channels for information, particularly the agency’s verified Facebook pages. She cautioned the public against engaging with fake Facebook pages masquerading as official DSWD accounts, which often spread misinformation and attempt to defraud unsuspecting individuals. “We encourage everyone to follow only the official DSWD Region 2 Facebook page and remain vigilant when browsing social media,” Urata stated, highlighting the agency’s dedication to protecting its clients from online scams and disinformation.
The information caravan also serves as a platform to educate beneficiaries about the range of services and benefits available to them. DSWD Region 2 legal officer, Lawyer Carl Eric Lingan, noted that many solo parents remain unaware of the full extent of assistance they are entitled to. He urged solo parents to register with their local social welfare and development offices and to apply for a Solo Parent ID, which serves as a gateway to accessing crucial support programs. This proactive approach aims to ensure that eligible individuals receive the assistance they need, empowering them to navigate the challenges of single parenthood.
