Bangladesh Lauds Diplomatic Correspondents’ Role in Combating Misinformation
Dhaka, Bangladesh – In a ceremony held at the Foreign Service Academy on December 26, 2024, Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin commended the vital role of diplomatic correspondents in preventing the spread of misinformation and rumors, emphasizing the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in international relations. He stressed that meticulous fact-checking and verification are crucial to avoid diplomatic tensions and maintain healthy bilateral relationships. The Foreign Secretary’s remarks came during the inaugural “DCAB Media Award” ceremony, hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB).
Uddin underscored the amplified importance of responsible journalism in the digital age, where information disseminates rapidly across the globe. He appealed to diplomatic correspondents for their continued cooperation in countering misinformation, recognizing their role as critical in distinguishing between verified information and false narratives. The Foreign Secretary expressed gratitude for DCAB’s efforts in clarifying complex diplomatic issues and providing insightful analysis, highlighting their invaluable contribution to public understanding.
The Foreign Secretary emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive future founded on justice, human rights, and unity, acknowledging the growing global significance of Bangladesh. He stressed the need for enhanced collaboration between the diplomatic community and the media, underscoring the media’s role in disseminating information about government initiatives and diplomatic engagements to the public. Uddin praised DCAB’s ability to simplify complex diplomatic matters for broader comprehension and commended their contribution to government accountability.
The inaugural DCAB Media Awards recognized outstanding contributions to diplomatic reporting across various media platforms. Mizanur Rahman, Special Correspondent for Daily Manabzamin, received the award in the print category; Md Mashrequl Islam (Mashreq Rahat), Senior Reporter for Maasranga Tv, was honored in the television category; and Md Nazrul Islam, Diplomatic Correspondent for Dhaka Post, received the award in the online category. The awards aim to acknowledge excellence in diplomatic journalism and encourage further professional development within the field.
The Foreign Secretary lauded DCAB’s initiative in establishing the awards and expressed his hope for its continuation in future years. He praised the professionalism and dedication of diplomatic correspondents, recognizing their contribution to informing the public and strengthening Bangladesh’s diplomatic standing. A distinguished jury panel, comprising Reaz Ahmed, Executive Editor of Dhaka Tribune; Dr. Md Saiful Alam Chowdhury, Associate Professor at the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism of Dhaka University; and Miraj Ahmed Chowdhury, Managing Director of Digitally Right, meticulously evaluated the submitted reports.
The jury’s assessment criteria included the context, novelty, and significance of the chosen topic; the use of information and sources; language and presentation style; the reasoning and structure of the writing; and any original research conducted by the reporters. This rigorous evaluation process ensures the recognition of high-quality journalism that contributes meaningfully to the public understanding of complex diplomatic issues. The event, attended by prominent figures including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, DCAB President Nurul Islam Hasib, and General Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Apu, reinforced the collaborative spirit between the government and the media in promoting accurate and responsible reporting on diplomatic affairs.
