Social Media’s Double-Edged Sword: A Tool for Democracy or Disruption?

Notably, during recent conflicts like the Israel-Gaza war, online platforms have provided alternative narratives and exposed government inaccuracies, challenging the narratives presented by mainstream media outlets. Furthermore, social media has offered a platform to address shortcomings in democratic processes, such as the decline of public spaces for engagement and the increasing opacity of decision-making.

The 2018 campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment in Ireland provides a compelling case study of how social media can be effectively harnessed for democratic mobilization.
