Bangladesh Chief Adviser Calls on UN for Action Against Disinformation and Promotion of Ethical Media

DHAKA, Bangladesh – Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has appealed to the United Nations to establish a robust mechanism to combat the pervasive issue of disinformation and bolster ethical practices within the media landscape. During a meeting with UNESCO representatives Susan Vize and Mehdi Benchelah, Yunus emphasized the severity of the problem, highlighting the relentless influx of fake news originating both domestically and from sources abroad. This meeting preceded the release of a joint UNDP-UNESCO report assessing Bangladesh’s media landscape, focusing on the crucial elements of a free, independent, and pluralistic media environment. Yunus expressed keen anticipation for the report’s findings and recommendations.

Yunus stressed that disinformation is not limited to digital platforms but also permeates traditional media outlets. He urged the UN to engage not only with the government but also directly with media organizations to address the issue. Emphasizing the importance of independent regulation, he advocated for a system where media outlets consistently disseminating false information are publicly identified as untrustworthy. Recognizing the weight of the UN’s voice, Yunus underscored the need for the organization’s support in tackling this challenge.

Vize revealed that the forthcoming report delves into the critical subject of media self-regulation, along with other key areas. She explained that the assessment identifies both strengths and weaknesses within Bangladesh’s media, offering recommendations aligned with international standards. Vize stressed the need for training programs targeting government officials, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary to ensure their practices align with these established standards.

Benchelah highlighted that the report also addresses the pressing issue of journalists’ working conditions, a concern resonating globally, and specifically focuses on the safety of female journalists within newsrooms. He emphasized the significant influence governmental actions can have in improving these areas. The report, developed under the umbrella of UNDP’s Strengthening Institutions, Policies and Services (SIPS) project, aligns with UNESCO’s core mission of championing freedom of expression and media development.

The meeting took place against a backdrop of increasing concern about the spread of misinformation and its potential impact on democratic processes and societal cohesion. Yunus’s appeal to the UN reflects a growing recognition of the need for international cooperation and robust mechanisms to counter the proliferation of false narratives. The upcoming report is expected to offer valuable insights and recommendations for strengthening the media landscape in Bangladesh and promoting a more informed and resilient society.

The collaborative effort between UNDP and UNESCO in producing this comprehensive report underscores the importance of a multi-faceted approach to addressing the complex challenges faced by the media. The report’s focus on free, independent, and pluralistic media aligns with international standards and best practices, emphasizing the crucial role of a vibrant media ecosystem in fostering democratic discourse and accountability. The recommendations within the report are expected to provide a roadmap for stakeholders, including government, media organizations, and civil society, to work together in strengthening the media landscape and safeguarding the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
