Thailand Launches Pre-Dawn Artillery Barrage on Cambodian Territory, Escalating Border Tensions
PHNOM PENH – In a dramatic escalation of long-simmering border tensions, Thai forces launched a pre-dawn artillery attack on Cambodian territory this morning, targeting multiple locations in the vicinity of the disputed Preah Vihear temple. The assault, which began at 2:00 am local time, focused on the Eagle Field area and quickly expanded to include Tathav, Phnom 333, and Phnom Khmoach. Adding to the aggression, Thai forces also deployed drones during the initial stages of the offensive. The artillery fire intensified over the next few hours, with Thai forces indiscriminately shelling the Ta Mone Thom and Ta Krabey temples at 4:50 am, according to information released by the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence. Armored units joined the infantry offensive at 6:30 am, targeting Eagle Field, Bram Makara, Phnom Khmoach, and An Ses, further solidifying the intensity and breadth of the Thai incursion.
The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence also expressed concerns about a significant buildup of Thai troops along the border, particularly in provinces adjacent to Battambang. The Ministry of National Defence stressed that Cambodia remains committed to resolving the border dispute peacefully, but will defend its sovereignty against unwarranted attacks.
“This is a desperate attempt to divert attention from the reality that Thailand has repeatedly violated Cambodian sovereignty and international law,” declared Ms. Socheata. She emphasized the indisputable fact that Thailand instigated the attack, stressing, “The truth is undeniable: Thailand was the one who launched the first brutal attack on Cambodian territory.” This strong rebuke of Thailand’s actions underscores the seriousness with which Cambodia views this latest escalation, and signifies the potential for a prolonged and complex diplomatic standoff alongside the military tensions.
