Azerbaijan Accuses Armenia of Disinformation Amidst Border Tensions: Renewed Clashes Erupt Along Disputed Line

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN – March 31, 2025 – The fragile peace along the volatile Armenia-Azerbaijan border has once again been shattered, with both nations trading accusations of aggression and disinformation. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a stern statement accusing Armenia of initiating armed provocations and subsequently attempting to conceal its actions through a campaign of disinformation. This latest incident further escalates the long-standing tensions between the two Caucasus nations, raising concerns about the potential for renewed large-scale conflict.

The MoD’s statement, released late on March 31, detailed an alleged attack on Azerbaijani Army positions near the Bazarchay settlement in the Garakilsa region. According to the statement, Armenian forces opened fire on Azerbaijani positions at approximately 11:10 AM local time, utilizing small arms fire. The ministry characterized this incident as the latest in a series of ceasefire violations and provocative actions by Armenian forces, which they claim have included repeated reconnaissance flights using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over Azerbaijani territory.

Azerbaijan’s MoD vehemently denied counter-claims made by Armenia, which accused Azerbaijani forces of firing upon the Khanazakh settlement. Dismissing these allegations as "baseless, entirely false, and disinformation," the Azerbaijani MoD accused Armenia of deliberately attempting to mislead the international community and manipulate public opinion. This exchange of accusations underlines the deep mistrust that continues to plague relations between the two countries.

The incident comes amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions and ongoing disputes over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a mountainous enclave internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but populated primarily by ethnic Armenians. The region has been a source of conflict for decades, with a full-scale war erupting in 2020. While a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement brought an end to the major hostilities, sporadic clashes and accusations of ceasefire violations have continued to occur, underscoring the fragility of the peace.

The use of disinformation as a weapon in this ongoing conflict is a particularly concerning development. Both sides have accused the other of spreading false narratives to gain international support and demonize the opposing side. This information warfare further complicates efforts to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict and fosters an environment of mistrust and suspicion. Independent verification of claims and access to reliable information are crucial to understanding the complex dynamics at play and holding both parties accountable for their actions.

The international community has called for both Armenia and Azerbaijan to exercise restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully. The Minsk Group, co-chaired by France, Russia, and the United States, has been mediating the conflict for years, but a lasting solution remains elusive. The recent border clashes underscore the urgent need for renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and work towards a comprehensive peace agreement. The future stability of the region hinges on the willingness of both sides to de-escalate tensions and commit to a constructive dialogue. The international community must play an active role in facilitating this process and ensuring that both Armenia and Azerbaijan adhere to their obligations under international law.
