Bangladesh Grapples with Surge in Misinformation: Political Figures and National Issues Dominate False Narratives
Dhaka, Bangladesh – The first quarter of 2025 witnessed a significant surge in misinformation across Bangladesh, according to a comprehensive report released by Rumor Scanner, a prominent fact-checking organization. The report documented 837 instances of misinformation, a troubling 21% increase compared to the final quarter of 2024. This alarming trend is attributed to a confluence of factors, including ongoing political developments, sensitive national issues, and religious controversies, all of which provide fertile ground for the spread of false narratives. Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, emerged as the primary vectors for disseminating this misinformation, posing a significant challenge to accurate information and public discourse in the country.
The political landscape of Bangladesh has been a major focal point of misinformation campaigns. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emerged as the most frequent target, with a significant portion of the false content portraying her in a positive light. Among political parties, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was linked to the highest number of misinformation cases. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was also implicated in numerous instances, with its Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, being particularly targeted by negative narratives. Conversely, acting chairman Tarique Rahman was predominantly portrayed positively in the misinformation linked to him. The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) also featured in a number of misleading reports, highlighting how misinformation permeates various levels of the political spectrum.
The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has also been a frequent target of misinformation since assuming power in August 2024. The Rumor Scanner report reveals a consistent stream of negative portrayals of both the interim government and Dr. Yunus himself. This targeted campaign underscores the vulnerability of even highly respected figures to the manipulative tactics employed in the spread of false information. The report’s findings paint a concerning picture of a concerted effort to undermine the credibility of the interim government through fabricated stories and misleading narratives.
The mechanics of misinformation in Bangladesh are diverse, encompassing fabricated content, misleading interpretations, and distorted facts. The Rumor Scanner report meticulously categorized these instances, providing valuable insights into the methods used to manipulate public opinion. The fact-checking team employed rigorous verification techniques, analyzing text-based claims, images, and videos to expose the falsehoods. The sheer volume of misinformation, coupled with the sophisticated tactics employed, highlights the scale of the challenge facing Bangladesh in combating this insidious phenomenon.
The thematic focus of the misinformation campaigns reveals a clear pattern. Politics dominated, accounting for a substantial 41% of all cases, followed by national issues at 29%. Religious misinformation, a persistent concern in recent years, continued its upward trajectory, further exacerbating societal divisions. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) and its leaders were also targeted, illustrating how misinformation campaigns can be weaponized against specific groups and individuals. Even law enforcement and military institutions were not immune, with the Bangladesh Army being a primary target, raising concerns about the potential for misinformation to undermine national security.
Adding another layer of complexity, the Rumor Scanner report identified a significant role played by Indian media and social media accounts in spreading misinformation related to Bangladesh. Numerous Indian media outlets published misleading reports, often with a communal undertone. This cross-border dimension underscores the increasingly transnational nature of misinformation campaigns and the need for international cooperation to address this challenge effectively. The report’s findings highlight the urgency for both domestic and international efforts to combat the spread of misinformation and protect the integrity of information in Bangladesh.
